2006 XTERRA S 4X4- Great bang for the buck!
Pros:
This is a great vehicle for an active lifestyle, this is a real truck.
Cons:
Gas mileage is marginal, I get about 300 miles on a tank.
The Bottom Line:
If you are looking for a real truck SUV that's as comfortable in the mud as on the highway, this is it.

Bought the Xterra primarily for the wife and baby, I've always been a big fan of Nissan as they are very dependable vehicles.(I already have a 2001 Maxima)
The Xterra is nice because it is a real truck, not a car trying to pretend to be a truck. Unlike my Ford F150 4X4, it's not too big for my wife to be comfortable in but it's not too small either. It has a very peppy 265 HP V6, which is standard. Steering is responsive and accurate. It behaves well on the highway and the surface streets and does a pretty good job off road too. I took it through some fairly deep mud and it handled it like a champ!
Overall I'm real happy with this truck and I can see why Motor Trend called it the Best SUV of 2006.
The dashboard layout is simple and functional and the vehicle overall has a nice ride. The interior is a bit spartan but nice. This truck is set up to go do things, but it's not a luxury vehicle with all the bells and whistles.
It has a very quiet ride except for the windshield wind noise. The rear cargo area is very slippery, and unless you strap everything down everything slides everywhere. The included netting is somewhat confusing-I need to figure out how to get the most from it. Probably going to put a piece of carpet back there for now...There are all sorts of hooks and storage nooks in this truck. I can hardly wait to take it on a road trip to the beach.
Funny thing is, there is no indicator that this truck is a 4X4 with the exception of the knob on the dashboard. So far I'm real happy with my new Xterra...

This morning here in Dallas I've had my first opportunity to drive the Xterra in icy snow and sleet conditions and I have to say I am impressed with how sure footed it drives on both surface streets, highways and on bridges. Honestly, the Xterra felt very stable, has terrific traction and felt quite safe. This truck does an above average job in adverse conditions, much better than my Ford F150 4X4 Offroad did on Monday which was somewhat of a surprise. I'm very happy with the 2006 Xterra.
