Love it, my second Xterra!
Pros:
Versatile, rugged, extremely capable in adventuresome conditions.

I started with a 2WD 2000 Xterra SE; it enabled all kinds of adventures (hiking, skiing, surfing, mountain biking). It changed my lifestyle! I love it so much I upgraded to the 4WD Supercharged 2003 (SE SC) model. Big step up! I am especially impressed with it in heavy snow and sand, and its also terrific on dirt roads and rocky, rugged terrain. The stock suspension only has a couple of inches travel so hardcore offroading calls for different shocks and tires. The ride is very stiff and truck-like but that is a "real" SUV for you. My passengers (usually 3-4) don't seem to mind since it gets them to the trailhead, scuba dives, the ski resort, and down to baja faster than any other car in our circle! Also, its a major gas guzzler (~15mpg) and that is hard these days ... the Supercharger requires premium gas too (ouch). The only thing I would change about this car is the gas economy. If you're outdoorsy and active, this is definitely the car for you! This is a real SUV (not a raised minivan) with a lot of practical capabilities.
