Not sure about this truck...
Date of Review: Aug 30, 2004
The Bottom Line: I would steer most people away from this truck. If I had to do it over, I'd have gone for the less flashy but tighter Tacoma.
We loved the styling when we first saw it. It truly is the best looking truck of its kind on the market even today. It drove great, and it was just what we needed at the time so we purchased it with around 22k miles.
Shortly thereafter, the horn stopped working. It wasn't a fuse. This of course happened right after our factory warranty ran out. As time went by, the recall notices from Nissan started rolling in. We received five total, the last being about a faulty fuel pump. This didn't instill too much confidence in us.
The fuel mileage was miserable. We got around 11 miles to the gallon on average. Handling was horrible even for a truck. The vehicle started to lose its "new" feeling very early. We never had an outright mechanical failure, but the engine made lots of noise, there was creaking and squealing from the undercarriage, the transmission didn't shift as smoothly, and the car got quite a shimmy at freeway speeds. (we did an alignment every six months) The upholstery was very hard to clean.
This was all in 60k miles. We decided to sell the truck when our fuel costs got really bad and a truck was no longer necessary. We got a 2000 Toyota Camry that was a year older and had higher mileage, but it runs silent and drives like new. We traded the truck to the Camry owner and when he took it in to the Nissan dealership it needed CV joints done (all 4), tires (again), and brakes (again). Over $1000 worth of work on a 3 year old car that was driven normally.
