We bought the SE model brand new with an automatic transmission. Our salesperson sold me by telling me how the engine and suspension are the same as the 300ZX (I had a beaten up Z for years). The car itself sold me by driving easily with a great sense of balance and power. It drives as light and easy to maneuver as a much smaller vehicle.
Over time, I've come to appreciate this car more and more. I just bought tires for my 3 year old Maxima and I've found that the handling is fantastic! I always thought my 300Z was ecstacy on the road - but I now look at those days as the dark ages. My Maxima is so much better!
It has a greater sense of space and airflow in the cabin; excellent ergonomics to assist me with defensive driving; greater field of vision; seats that give proper back support to my old back injury; enhanced safety via antilock brakes and airbags, and it even seems to have less inertia than my sports car did. I seem to remember that my Z always felt like it was a little too heavy....
Let's not forget that it also has 4 doors, is exceedingly roomy in the back seat, and is safer in a crash. It also doesn't scrape speedbumps like the Z did.
Essentially, this car is the perfect family car. It drives fast for Dad, is easy to drive and park for Mom, and has enough back seat space to fit our very large baby boy and his baby seat (we had to buy the largest seat we could). It is a very sturdy and reliable car that we feel is worth every penny we spend in maintainance. We expect this car to last well over 10 years.
