I bought my 1997 Sentra GXE because of the recent upswing in gas prices and I needed something for commuting to work. I have been very impressed with the quality of this car. It has 118,000 miles on it and it has had no major repair work. The previous owner provided service records which only included minor items, and I have only had to replace the windshield wiper arm which cost me a whopping 20 dollars. Some people seem to forget that this is an economy car when they note some of its deficiencies. Mine has cruise control, AC, power windows and locks, and a trunk and gas cap release inside, a lot of features for a basic model. I have also not found power to be a problem as some have noted, but I do have the 5 speed manual which allows more control in this area. The ride for a small car is really good with little road noise. The car absorbs bumps in the road well, and I should know as I live in one of the worst states as far as road quality (Pennsylvania). You can pretty easily put 2 normal sized people in the back comfortably, and the trunk is really quite big. I also have a 1998 Ford Escort Zx2, and while it is reliable so far, there is a big difference in road noise/ride/build quality. The Escort only has 28,000 miles and the interior makes all sorts of annoying noises and it is noisy on the road. And lastly, my Sentra gets 35 mpg in its sleep and got a little over 40 mpg on a recent trip to North Carolina. Overall a big winner in this price segment. Do not pay the extra money for a Honda, get a Sentra!
