Product Review

250K AND STILL GOING.

by   halftankmo ,   Aug 5, 2004

Pros:  A design ahead of its time. Great handling and good mileage. Great engine.

Cons:  Transmission problems. ECU failure. Rust at pillars. Expensive parts. Poor Nissan service.

The Bottom Line:  Only buy this car if the price is right and someone else has paid for the major repairs. Don't bring the car to Nissan. Find parts at wreckers.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought my 1992 NX2000 used in 1996 with approximately 128,000 Kms. It does not have T-tops, A/C or ABS. I bought this car because a friend had one and I was amazed by the performance, fuel efficiency and looks of this car. I believe that the styling of this car was ahead of its time as Nissan only offered it in Canada for three years due to low sales. I recently had the car painted after being broadsided by a school bus. I painted the car all one colour and it looks much better without the two-tone moldings. People often ask what year my car is because the lines suggest it is much newer.

Some of the problems I've had with this car: 1. 5th gear pop-out. The car would not stay in 5th gear. It cost approximately $1400 to fix. Nissan will not admit that this is a defect.

2. Rust at windshield pillars. Check this area carefully. Just about every NX I've seen has rust in this area. By the time I had it fixed the rust was much worse on the inside than it looked on the outside. Another expensive fix. Caused windshield to crack as well.

3. ECU failure. Another common problem. My car was running very rough for some time. I finally had it checked out by an electrical shop (Nissan couldn't find the problem $500 later) who discovered that my ECU was toast. When I removed the ECU it was completely corroded. This was possibly a result of water getting inside due to the pillars rusting out. Expensive fix: Nissan only had one ECU in the country. None were available at the wreckers. Cost from Nissan $1400. Make sure the check engine light works. If it doesn't it could mean the ECU needs replacement.

4. The seats can be uncomfortable on long rides. I'm going to replace them with Honda seats.

Besides these problems I still do enjoy driving my NX. The engine is still going strong and the limited-slip differential helps acceleration and driving in wet weather and snow. Just get the car rust-proofed every year. Watch the rain, the shape of the roof makes water run right off the roof and into your open window.

Handling is excellent in this small car. The rear seat is very small but it folds down and you can fit a surprisingly large amount in the hatch.

I love my NX2000 but due to poor customer service by Nissan service; (I should not be able to diagnose a problem when a trained Nissan technician can't) and very expensive replacement parts;($140 for one rear hatch strut), I will not by another Nissan again. I'm just going to keep driving my Nissan until it dies or needs another expensive fix, then I'm buying a different make.
