Product Review

Great fun at first, but I can see myself getting bored with it

by   alanp ,   Mar 16, 2007

Pros:  Fast, fun, simple and exciting. Has the potential to be a good party game.

Cons:  Can get repetitive, if you play long enough, you'll memorize all the micro games.

The Bottom Line:  Buy it if you can afford it: the originality of the gaming experience is worth playing through it even only once. Otherwise at least rent it!

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

So maybe it was the fresh idea of the Wii remote, or maybe it was the wackiness of story that gave me an awesome initial first impression... because I got sucked into this game right away when I first played it at my friends house. A couple weeks later, when I got myself a Wii, this was one of the first games I bought. So why did I get sucked into it? Two words, simple and fun!

I've never played any other previous Wario Ware games, but I heard the premise the pretty much the same for all of them: It's full of dozens and dozens of "micro games", games that literally only last a few seconds each. This translates to quick reflexes and for Smooth Moves, innovative uses for the motion sensing abilities of the Wii remote. Still confused? Let me get right into more details.

Each micro game starts with a "pose". There are almost a dozen different starting poses. An example of a pose is the "remote" pose, basically you hold the Wii remote like a remote control pointing in front of you. Another example is the "umbrella" where you hold the Wii remote vertical like you're holding an umbrella. Ok keep this in mind while we go into some examples of micro games.

An example of one micro game that starts with the "umbrella" pose is a quick jog/sprint. Basically, you hold the the Wii Remote like an umbrella, and you jog in place causing the remote to move up and down. This in turn makes the character on the screen run to the finish line. Keep in mind, you only have about 3 seconds to react to the instructions on the screen and carry out the action, which adds to the fun, and potentially causes you to not complete the task. It may sound a little lame, and I can see how some people would think so, but I think to the majority, it can be fun.

Ok, you get the basic idea of the micro games so far? Now just imagine literally hundreds of these micro games, chained together in groups of 10-40+ depending the level you're playing, and accomplishing all of them with only 4 chances of screwing up per level. You'll be doing crazy things while standing in front of the TV, doing weird poses, almost like a really messed up version of charades. Add that with the wacky and amusing graphics, it's guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and child-like giddy enjoyment while playing through the various single player levels.

While playing alone can be fun in itself, I can see how it can get old. I've only had it for 2 days and I've pretty much blown through all the single player levels. I'm not bored with it yet, I still want to go back and get higher scores on the levels. Plus there are levels that don't have an end goal, but where you just keep going potentially forever to see how many micro-games you can pass without screwing up.

There are a few levels which deviate from the chains of micro-games approach. These levels are really a whole separate mini-game in itself. I'm not going to get into details of these games, you need to see them for yourself. But I will say they are very innovative as well, especially with the Wii Remote. The basic idea of these special levels is just to see how high of a score you can get, i.e. how long you can last playing without screwing up.

One last thing I want to mention about the single player action is that there is one level that requires both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk. This level is also a chain of micro-games, but you get to use both hands individually, which adds to the fun/confusion!

Aside from the single player action, there is a multiplayer mode too. And I don't mean a bunch of your friends standing around and watching you make a fool out of yourself, although that would be entertaining as well! Anyway, I haven't tried the multiplayer mode yet, but I can imagine it would be even more fun with interaction with your friends. One note though, you have to beat the majority of the levels on single player mode before you unlock the multiplayer mode.

Overall, this game is fun. The biggest worry I have is that I'll get bored of it soon. I can totally see someone memorizing all the micro games if they play it enough. However, at least there is more replay potential and chances for good laughs every time you get together with friends and play it in multiplayer mode.

If you get bored of simple games easily or you aren't the type of person to keep trying at a something to beat your previous high score, I'd say it's still worth playing, but you might want to just rent it. However, if you like goofy antics and enjoy pressing yourself harder each time you break your previous record, this will keep you entertained for hours and hours.
