Author's Review
The Nintendo 64, that little black box with a slot for a cartridge and four controller ports, was born in October 1996. And in that time it has started several huge new video game trends (among them, force feedback controllers and the analog joystick). I could go on for hours about how the N64 is better than the rest (no load time, better graphics, the coolest controller ever), but I think a system is best judged on the games, because that what matters. You could have the most powerful system on the planet, but if the games suck, who cares. So this is it, the best of the best, the creme de la silicon, the best games for the system. And I didn't number them, because I don't think I could number them. So without wasting any time:
All-Star Baseball (Series)
Probably the most realistic sports game ever. All-Star Baseball has great graphics and plays perfectly. It has almost every little nuance that is in the great game of baseball crammed into that little cartridge.
Excitebike 64
The 64-bit update to the NES classic. The graphics and sound are intense, and the challenge is way up there. And to totally complete the update the track editor makes a return for you to create new tracks in total 3D. A great little motorcycle racing game that even gives you the option of playing the original Excitebike!
GoldenEye
The king of first person shooters. One of the first shooters that changed from the whole shoot everything that moves style, into something way more challenging. This game oozes Bond with all of the theme music, way cool gadgets, and saving the day with the beautiful women at your side. I mean the only things missing are Moneypenny and martinis. A great game that was made even better with an addictive multiplayer mode. And it's Bond, James Bond.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Another classic update. The Zelda series has always set the standard for Action/Adventure games, and this entry is no different. And now the fantasy world of Hyrule is in complete 3D, with all the familiar characters, enemies, and places. The final battle against Gannon is the probably the most amazing part of a video game I've ever seen.
Madden NFL Football (Series)
Another great sports game. This series features great graphics and seems to get better with each new release. The only way to play football on your N64, accept no substitutes this is the real deal. And they've been making games in this series since 1990 on the SNES.
Mario Kart 64
Racing with Mario characters in go karts sounds kinda silly. But gather a few friends up, play the battle mode, and have a blast. It's so insanely fun to shoot off a turtle shell and watch it knock your friends into the water. I told you it was silly.
The New Tetris
Tetris returns just as addictive as ever. And now this version features some the smoothest control ever. It's incredible what a little thing like improved control to do this little puzzle game. The four player mode works great, and is a welcome addition. Score lines and keep going in this addicting puzzle game.
Perfect Dark
The follow up to GoldenEye. Take everything in GoldenEye and crank it up a little. Bigger solo missions, bigger multiplayer, sharper graphics. It's got it all.
Resident Evil 2
Not just a port of the PSX game, but the best version of RE2 you're able to buy. The zombies are invading, ahhhh! Was that one behind me? The graphics are immense, and the game scared the hell out of me.
Super Mario 64
What top games list would be complete without Mario? Mario makes the move to 3D perfectly. The graphics are sharp, the controller was designed for this game. Nothing could be done to this game to make it any better, and arguably it's still the best N64 game out there.
