Bad implementation. Disappointment.

Ultimate Alliance, as I’ve said it some other reviews, it yet another game not designed specifically for the Wii. Unfortunately, it shows. When I bought the game, I was envisioning from the commercials that I would be swinging my arms around casting webs as spider man and swinging from place to place. Boy was I disappointed! This really is meant to be a button mashing fighting game. There is very little strategy involved in the actual game play (really, the only strategy is where to use your points to build character traits). The motion controls incorporated into the Wii version are not “natural”, and are really really clunky. You have to practice the motion many times to really get it right, and I ended up just using one or two of the moves that I could do easily for that reason. One other thing about the game is that there are 4 super heroes on the screen at all times fighting the enemies. This would be fine if you had 4 people playing at once (though that might get hectic) however when I’m playing by myself I want to kill the bad guys myself. The rest of the heroes on your team only serve to get in the way or steal my kills preventing me from gaining experience on the character I want. I couldn’t find a way to play with only one hero. Maybe this game would be fun on another system, but the controls are just too hard, the viewing angles are annoying, and it really isn’t that much fun to play by yourself. Rent it if you want, but don’t buy it.
