Unexpectedly Bad
Date of Review: Jan 27, 2000
I bought this book without reading the intro. assuming that it was the latest in McCaffrey's "brain-brawn" universe. Wrong. It isn't anything of the sort. It also isn't as engaging as those books are.
While I found Nimisha to be a decent character, this book does not do her
justice. Publisher's Weekly called it a "thinly disguised romance novel" and as much as it pains me to do so, I am going to have to agree with them.
Take out the space travel and the furry and prolific little aliens and what you are left with is a Harlequin romance.
To wit:
Bright girl goes on adventure. Bright girl meets boy. Girl and boy are attracted to each other but won't admit it. Girl and boy are thrown together and fall into bed. Everyone lives happily ever after.
Not exactly challenging reading.
If you are absolutely addicted to McCaffrey and can't bear not to read anything she writes--go ahead and buy this book--otherwise, you really aren't missing anything. This book is good for escapist reading and not much else.
