Pros:
great pictures, a lot of options, a lot of accessories.
Cons:
Many menu options. Some menu selections revert back to default setting when switching modes.
The Bottom Line:
This is a great camera, even if it is an older model. Provides a lot of flexibility, yet, in the auto mode, it is nearly a point and click camera.

As our baby daughter was becoming more mobile, we quickly realized that the run-of-the-mill digital cameras were not up to the task of catching her in action. Most of them have to much latency between when you push the shutter release button until they capture the picture.
We did some on-line research, and were considering the Canon Rebel. But the one I held just didn't feel good in my hand. We were also considering the D70. But after comparing the features, we choose to purchase a used D70S. A good side by side comparison can be found at: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042003nikond70s.asp The D70S has a larger LCD display, also . On-board flash coverage isn't quite as good, but we prefer to use the SB-600 speedlight. The D70S also came with an updated battery (EN-EL3A) to correct a recall issue.
My wife likes the automatic setting for quick point and shoot. I enjoy the flexibility of shooting in either the program mode or manual mode. It has been a great camera. We have since purchased additional lenses, the flash, and other accessories.
I am always keeping an eye out for another used body. We probably have 5 or 10 thousand pictures on it by now, and no issues with it. If you are looking for a great camera new or used, I would consider the D70S if you can get your hands on one.
