The Real Deal

by   uniq , top reviewer in Electronics at Epinions.com ,  Aug 5, 2004
Pros: price/performance, ergonomics, build quality, optical performance
Cons: slight flaring, discontinued, doesn't come with lens hood
The Bottom Line: if you are on a budget buy the F/1.8 AF. If you can afford the better build quality and ergonomics then the F/1.4 AIS is hard to beat.
Review: If you're shooting with a 50mm prime attached to your camera then I think it's a safe bet that you are looking for top-notch optical performance above all else. If ease of use were paramount then you'd have some super zoom. If you're going to go to all ...

A quality lens to exercise your composition

by   joseazevedo ,  Feb 3, 2005
Pros: Fast, bokeh, quality, color, size and weight (I prefer heavier ones)
Cons: A bayonet hood instead of a screw type, but that's a wish not a problem
The Bottom Line: This lens deserves more attention. Rediscover it. It's a pleasure worth trying.
Review: This is a lens I appreciate for its angle forces us on composition. I find its challenge is to make images that don't look as if taken with a 50mm. When you master it, results are gratifying. I call it an "exercise lens" for this reason. I have two ...

Nikon 50mm 1.4 is worth the extra dollars

by   desmondsmith ,  Feb 22, 2004
Pros: Great Depth of field. Easy Low light photography at 1.4
Cons: Higher price than the lesser lens, but worth it....
The Bottom Line: If you can't afford this lens, wait till you can. Great way to start your collection with a NIKON lens that's D rated and made for the PROS.
Review: I purchased this lens last week, prior to using this lens, I used the Nikon 50mm 1.8D. The Nikon 50mm 1.4D lens is night and day compared. The first thing I noticed was the depth of field difference you get with this lens. If you shoot manual at 1.4, ...

Nikon's 50mm 1.4D, Beware! Extreme quality ahead!

by   stevespranzman ,  Feb 27, 2001
Pros: Quality glass, Quality construction, Quality pictures, Nikon Quality 100%!
Cons: Um... I am still thinking......
The Bottom Line: Buy this lens. Don't get the 28-80mm standard Nikon lens which is made of plastic. I have see point and shoots outperform that lens.
Review: A 50mm lens was the first lens that I ever used, and for the first 5 years of my photography career, it was the only. After I became professional, I started playing around with a bunch of zoom lenses, but was never really satisfied and still find out...

If you have only one this is it

by   chriscalabro ,  Feb 18, 2001
Pros: The best low light/no light lens in my bag. Very good build quality
Cons: Price
The Bottom Line: The fastest, sharpest, cleanest lens in the Nikon lineup. Just get it
Review: Normal lens have gone the way of the buffalo. With the sexy zooms and 10X zoom ranges all the rage it is easy to over look a great normal lens. It is also easy to talk yourself out of buying this beauty due to its high price. But if a great lens is...

Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens

by   lankheet ,  Sep 6, 2008
Pros: Clear images.
Great color balance.
AF is fast and nearly perfect.
Cons: No lens hood.
For some reason, Nikon has stopped making them

Review: This is the best lens in my camera bag. I have several Nikon zoom lenses and they all do the job, just not as well as this one for it's intended purpose. This is a fixed lens and the only one you really need. the 85mm f1.4 is probably the ideal fixed ...

A Four Star Lens

by   sailingshot ,  Dec 19, 2006
Pros: FAST optics, light and sharp, good bokek
Cons: Expensive, requires lots of practice to use well.
The Bottom Line: If you need it, just buy one. Be sure to spend time with it and you'll be happy with the results.
Review: Overview: The Nikon 50mm 1.4 is a pro prime in a plastic body with very fast optics. The lens is exceedingly small and light. On a Nikon DSLR this becomes a 75mm lens and is well respected for portraits. Build: Somewhat dissapointing for a small ...

One of Nikon's worst lenses

by   pbenatar ,  Dec 30, 2004
Pros: When you first buy it it's OK.
Cons: Build quality. Poor aperture rings. Expensive for what it is.
Review: As a professional who's been using Nikon equipment for 10 years, this is the worst Nikon lens in my bag. It is also the only one make in China which is probably not incidental. When it was working, it was working fine - fast enough and with sharp ...
