A good solid choice

After spending many months, on and off, shopping for binoculars I had become quite confused. There are thousands of models ranging from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars each. How can a person choose? I could never find the right comparison charts or objective information.

I finally went to a store and took the time to try a variety of models. The dim light of a store, actually, is a good place to see the difference in optical quality.

This particular pair, the Nikon Momnarch ATB 8x40, worked best for me. It is relatively compact and lightweight, for the size of the optics. A heavier pair would be a chore to carry. Foggy binoculars are no fun, so the security of a waterproof model was important to me. My wife uses glasses, and I don't, so easily adjusted eyecups were a must. The hinge on this model includes a tripod mount, but I did not purchase the extra adapter.

The Nikon warranty is quite good -- 25 years. But the best part is the "No-Fault policy". If the damage is your fault, they'll charge just $10 for replacement or repair.
