Another example of Nikon precision and quality

There are many reviews of this camera on the web, so instead of rattling off the specs I will just give you the impressions of an ex-FM2n, ex-N90s user. I switched to the N90s when my grandson was born because of the flash capability. Until that time I was perfectly happy with my FM2n, one of the finest cameras EVER made by ANYONE. Of course, I got to the FM after using other Minolta and Nikon manual focus cameras, all of which I liked. I also liked the N90s, a true classic that can still be bought new.
But in using the auto-focus system I simply lost the enjoyment I experienced with all those great MF cameras, especially the FM2n. Then along came the FM3a. I sold the N90s for enough to buy the FM3a black body (over $500 mail order), and I dumped the AF lenses for some used MF classics. After almost a year I can truly say I have no regrets.
The FM3a is just a joy to use. The precision in function and form will absolutely slap you. And the TTL flash control is spot on. I really like the little flash exposure reduction button for fill flash. The (A)perture priority setting gives you perfect exposures every time, unless you have a wildly contrasting background, in which case you get to use the exposure lock button, or you can go completely manual to compensate.
The viewfinder is very bright, even with a 4.5 max lens. But this brings to mind the only minor complaint I have. In low light the exposure meter is difficult to see against a dark background. But so what? Put the camera in aperture priority and set your lens to a wide aperture.
I really like the DX film setting because I’m stupid. If I carry three or four different film speeds on a trip I will invariably forget to change the setting at least once, so this is a real boon for me.
The film loading is a labor of love, just like the FM2n. You have to be careful, and you have to watch the rewind knob to make sure the film did not slip off the spool. And you have to be careful ANYTIME your paws get close to the shutter. But all manual focus lovers already know and expect this stuff, so it is not a problem. With auto-focus cameras you slap the film in, pull out a few centimeters, close the cover and press the button. How can anyone look forward to that? I love loading the FM3a. The winder will remind you of stroking silk, and the crisp shutter is just what you expect from Nikon.
The feel of the camera is perfect for me. The classic shape makes for a sure grip and easy handling. All the camera’s functions are convenient, and the body is just heavy enough for comfort.
Did you ever wonder why so many photo freaks revere Nikon equipment? Try this camera and you will understand. I have to admit that I sometimes take this thing out of the bag and set it on the desk so I can glance at it occasionally; it’s that beautiful.
If you truly enjoy photography, I recommend you checkout one of these at a dealer. I doubt seriously if Leica or any other company can deliver a higher quality camera than the FM3a. I’m pretty sure my grandson will be using this thing long after they plant me.
