best of the cheap printers
Date of Review: Dec 12, 2005
The Bottom Line: Best of the cheap all in one printers. Fast, quiet, reliable. Stay away from Epson.
In the last 3 years I have gone through 4 printers - three Epsons (cx 5200, cx5600, cx 4600), and one Brother (MFC 210c). This HP is great. It is cheap, fast, quite, produces good quality prints, and so far has not given me any trouble. I have had this printer for a little over three months now and have printed over 3 reams of paper (? printed in black and white) and so far I am very happy. I had no problem installing the software on my iMac and was pleased to see that the printer has a nice variety of print options. The heads have never clogged and have never needed realigning. This is the fastest printer I have ever had. The PSC 1510 fires out sheets of paper in just a couple of seconds on the fastest print setting and prints full color photo quality documents in a very respectable 15-30 seconds. The print quality is equal to if not better than the Epson cx 5200, cx4600 and cx5600 and far far better than Brother MFC 210c. The scans and copies are equal to the above printers as well. This is a much shaper looking printer than the others as well. But, the biggest differences between this HP and the Epsons and Brother is that so far it has performed flawlessly. In comparison all three Epson printers became hopelessly clogged within 6 months and started giving me problems from the get go with paper feed jams, slow print speeds, misaligned print heads, software problems, and ink cartridges that claim to be empty when they are not. The Brother only lasted only 2 weeks. Right from the start I had difficulties loading the software, in fact, now I'm having problems trying to remove the software. The print quality was lousy - worse than the old-school dot matrix printers, and it was always out of alignment.
I paid $90 at staples for the PSC 1510 and it came with a $10 rebate. So far I have replaced the black cartridge twice and still have a little bit of the color left over. I don't remember how much the ink cartridge was but I think it was a fair price.
