Great Camera!
Date of Review: Dec 24, 2006
The Bottom Line: Great for anyone wanting to upgrade from point and shoot but not going all the way to Pro level.
Just purchased the Nikon D40. I had a Pentax SLR for a long time and just got tired of lugging all the lenses with me and it just got to be more of a hassle than fun. Now, with 2 kids I did not have the time or space to take it with me. We used a Kodak point and shoot for 4 years.
I really wanted to get a nicer camera with the kids getting older. So, instead of buying a top end DSLR that I didn't have the money for and still didn't want the hassle that goes along with it since I am not a professional photographer, I got the Nikon D40. I love it. Takes great--awesome pictures, fast shutter ( a must for kids) lightweight!!! You wouldn't believe how light this thing is. Battery is living strong from the many pics we have already taken.
My thoughts, if you are a more of a pro photographer there is really no reason for you to have this camera. If you have a bunch of lenses then that means you probably know more about what you are doing than someone like myself and you can work with a higher end model better. This is a great camera for anyone who wants to get more from their pics than using a point and shoot but does not want to get into the cameras with larger price tags thus more on the pro end.
Updating:
Had time to take some pics and they are very crisp and full of color and detail. I mainly use the auto mode when using the presets with having 2 kids I try to be ready for anything. The presets I have not used are landscape and night. The only time I get blurry pics is when I set it incorrectly or I can't keep my kids still. Used the sports mode today and worked wonderfully! Close ups are awesome looking too! Currently I am obsessed with setting the camera myself but when I get frustrated...to auto it goes and the world is good again.
I love the menu on the LCD. Easy to use. I learn something new everyday too. I have not had a problem with low light photos thus far.
Battery:
Does very well. I have been shooting LOTS of photos and it is holding up great.
