It was finally time for me to join the 21st century and get rid of my 32mm camera and go digital. I have to admit that when I first started shopping for my digital camera, I didn't have a clue what I was looking for. I didn't really know the difference. I did learn quickly though.
In my opinion, for not having a clue what I was looking for, the Nikon Coolpix P5000 Digital Camera was the best choice I could have made. It was very easy to learn with, which is was exactly what I was doing. I really didn't know the difference between ISO and AVR. I didn't know the difference between f stops and BSS. My Coolpix was the perfect learning digital camera.
This camera is small enough to stash anywhere but not so small that I couldn't distinguish what button I wanted to push. I know that there are much smaller out there, but I needed to see what I was doing.
The Nikon P5000 can be used either in full manual control or full auto mode. I had to use the auto mode most of the time in the beginning as I was learning but I was still thrilled with the quality. It did take awhile to get used to auto after using a 32 mm for so long. I know that for a photography buff, I should have gone digital a long time ago but I really am old school.
Although I didn't know what ISO was at the time, I know now that with the high manual limit that the P5000 has it is great for using in low light situations. I have even taken pics at a wedding in a chapel lit only by candle light with exceptable results. Of course it would have been better with flash but they weren't horrible.
I found the buttons really easy to use for a first timer as was the camera as a whole. In fact, my grandson uses it now with great results and he is only 9. I figure if a 9 year old can do it, that's pretty easy. I really like that the auto focus works so well, even in low light, that I could take my time learning and working with the manual focus controls which I still don't use very often because the camera seems to be smarter than me when it comes to focus.
I like the Image Stabilization feature alot as well as the Face Finder. These two features help to never have a really bad picture. The Best Shot Selector is also a great feature to get nice quality pictures every time. This feature picks out the best shot out of ten in a row and automatically saves it.
As I have learned more and more and worked with other digital cameras, my biggest complaint would have to be that I find the response time to be slower than some. I find this to be a problem when I am trying to photograph action situations such as a little league game. In most cases though, it is fast enough to catch all of the shots that I want to.
I know a whole lot more now than I did when I started using the Nikon Coolpix P5000 but I would still recommend it to anyone who is camera shopping. l find it extremely easy to use and control. It is a great camera for someone just learning or someone a little more experienced.
I still don't know all there is to know about digital photography but I have learned alot with this camera
