The Nikon Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 G ED-IF AF-S DX - a perfect short zoom?

by  jvandegr ,  Jul 22, 2007
25 out of 25 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Sharp throughout focal and aperture range, professional build quality, fast and accurate focus.
Cons: Slightly prone to flare, field curvature, and aberration. Heavy, large, expensive. Not sharper than 18-70mm.
The Bottom Line: Recommended for professional use when build quality and reliability are critical. Otherwise, the 18-70mm AF-S offers more for much less.

Review: Introduction

For many years, I have only used a zoom lens for the 70-200mm focal range. All of my wide angle and normal focal length work has been done with primes (fixed focal length lenses). For most of the history of photography,...

The best midrange zoom for digital

by  mimoid ,  Aug 9, 2006
16 out of 16 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Fast, constant aperture, build quality, excellent sharpness and image quality
Cons: Very expensive
The Bottom Line: If you can afford it, buy it. You will not be disappointed.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Introduction

The Nikon 17-55 DX is Nikon's flagship midrange digital zoom lens. The "DX" denomination means that the lens is optimized for the small sized sensors of Nikon digital cameras and is therefore not quite compatible with...

Don't Leave Home without IT

by  3rdpower ,  Oct 19, 2006
13 out of 13 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Best zoom for DSLR in the range AWESOME handling Superb sharpness, contrast, and color
Cons: Expensive for the difference between 18-55 and 18-70
The Bottom Line: This is an easy recommendation if you are trying to replace a bag load of primes or are simply looking for a great wide zoom. Look no further!
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: After battling over which lens I was going to go with 17-55 or 17-35 I decided to go with the 17-55mm and have not looked back. With more zoom (35-55) this unit really shines. Most 17-35 owners dislike this lens because it does not shine with film /...

"pro" digital zoom??

by  uniq ,  Mar 27, 2006
12 out of 12 people found this review helpful.
Pros: amazing construction quality, 77mm filters, fixed F/2.8 aperture
Cons: performance is totally average, flares easily, distortion is average.. low price/performance ratio
The Bottom Line: amazing construction but average performance, average distortion and noticeable flaring. I expect more from a lens in this price range.
This reviewer does not recommend this product.
Review: Anybody who reads my reviews will know that I am an absolute stickler for construction quality ESPECIALLY on equipment that is at the top-tier price levels. It seems that Nikon paid attention to its customers and finally made a DX lens that has the...

6 out of 6 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Sharpness - Quality just the BEST! - Used in 95% of all my shootings
Cons: Little heavy may be - but thats about it when it comes to Cons..
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Image qualities - sharpness - speed - all in all - 100%
I am not able to find a better lens with this focal dimensions. The focus speed is great! With the 1:2,8G I am able to take indoor pictures using ISO 400 and the images are great.
