Author's Review

About five years ago, my dad, a former New Yorker saw an commercial advertising subscriptions to the New Yorker magazine. The subscription was originally for him, and while his name still appears on the cover every week, we renew it each year as much for me as for him. In fact, while I was away at college this past year, my parents saved old issues and I would bring them back to school with me while I was home for a weekend.
The main reason I've fallen in love with this magazine is the consistent quality of its writers. I must admit that I usually have very little interest in areas like science; however, articles on subjects like that in the New Yorker are written so superbly that I'll find myself reading about something that might have appeared in my high school biology textbook and actually enjoying it.
In addition to articles about things I'm not interested in, there is plenty of great subject matter. Just this summer I read about people in Kentucky who eat squirrel brains, as well as a hilarious humor column that described what an episode of a Bob Dylan variety show would be like (basically, every line Dylan uttered was labeled "unintelligible"). I also love the short stories. Once a year they have something called a double-issue that is mostly fiction. It's probably my favorite issue every year. One year they featured up and coming (Asian) Indian authors and I enjoyed the short fiction and book reviews so much I began reading all sorts of books by these new authors.
Finally, the final reason why I love the New Yorker is that they seem to love Louise Gluck who is my favorite poet. She was featured in their 75th anniversary issue which was quite an honor, and in my opinion, she definitely deserved it.
