Dark, Dingy, Forgotten and Magical: Neverwhere's London Below

Date of Review:  Jul 26, 2002
The Bottom Line: If you like the fantastic, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere is a great read. If you don't generally enjoy fantasy, this could still prove enjoyable.
Review: I discovered Neverwhere on a long-ago trip to Amazon. I was looking for something a little different, something not revolving around the apocalypse or for that matter horror. What I got was a twisted tale set among forgotten people and lands alive...

Show me the door!

Date of Review:  Apr 27, 2009
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent urban fantasy that sucks you in and is hard to put down.  Not for young or squeamish readers.
Review: Richard Mayhew lives in contemporary London, has an ordinary job, has an ordinary apartment, and is engaged to the lovely Jessica, whom Richard’s friends think is a bit stuffy and domineering. One day, as Richard and Jessica are on the way to have...

Come below, my friend....

Date of Review:  Aug 21, 2001
The Bottom Line: Tale of an interesting alternate world underneath London. Story is basic but interestingly told, characters are functional but not terribly compelling. Worth looking at if you like odd fantasy.
Review: This book was lent to me by a guy at work who sometimes lends me books. I'm in favor of this since it keeps my brain cells from withering into bleak desolation on the daily train ride, plus I get to read interesting things I might not otherwise...

Neverwhere: World of Weirdness

Date of Review:  Sep 10, 2007
The Bottom Line: It's good. Just trust me, okay?
Review: Richard Mayhew is just an ordinary guy. He's leading the perfectly ordinary life – a job he loves to hate, a lovely and annoying fiance, deadlines and stuff, just the usual – in London. He lives his life like any other guy, scrambling to stay in...

Cool Dark Urban Fantasy

Date of Review:  Jun 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: If you like dark urban fantasy with odd sense of humor, this is the book for you.
Review: I took Neverwhere because a friend told me it was a great book, and I began to read it. At 3 AM, I was still reading it. I went to bed after I almost fell off the chair. First thing in the morning, I took the book again (one of the very few...

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere

Date of Review:  May 15, 2003
The Bottom Line: If you like good sci-fi fantasy stuff about alternate world, check this one out.
Review: Richard Mayhew was a normal guy, doing well for himself. In fact, he was doing better than well for himself. He had a great and successful job, and was soon to be married to Jessica, one of the more beautiful women in London.

One night,...

Gaiman's Neverwhere!!

Date of Review:  Oct 1, 1999
Review: I discovered Neil Gaiman when I read Good Omens which he wrote with Terry Prachett (very funny book on Armageddon, check it out). Neverwhere was not similar at all. However, if you're a fan of his Sandman comics, you'll like this book.

The...

a wonderful book

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 1999
Review: This is one of the strangest and most wonderful books I've ever read. Richard Mayhew stops to help a girl in trouble and gets drawn into her life. Her life is very, very different than his. Door (she has a knack for opening things) lives in London...

Our forgotten people

Date of Review:  Mar 30, 2000
Review: "Neverwhere" is a fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman.

Perhaps it was the jarring impact of reading bad Michael Moorcock stories these past couple of days that really left me ready for a great fantasy novel set in the mystical underworld of...

Urban Alice in Wonderland

Date of Review:  Jan 2, 2001
Review: I once read a London guidebook that briefly mentioned the abandoned stations of the Underground and immediately my imagination sparked. When I read "Neverwhere" it was like those daydreams were expanded and improved in 400 or so pages. Neil Gaiman's...
