Author's Review
I moved from Florida to North Carolina. Florida's road system is easy, up and down, left and right. East and West of 95, and that's it. NC apparently has no system. Roads change names at intersections, you can't see up coming road signs, the beltline is ridiculous to figure out, and the direction (east, west) makes no sense at all. Thus, I was prompted to buy a GPS unit. I didn't need one with mp3 capability, or any other bells and whistles. I am extremely happy with the Garmin C340. First, the mounting system can be used on the windshield or a plate that sticks to your dashboard. I prefer the windshield. The system is easy to remove and put on, I've never had a problem with that. The unit itself easily pops in and out (yes, even while driving). You could do it without looking at the unit. Next, the unit itself. Mine turns on automatically when I pop it in the holder since I have it plugged into an outlet. And I put in my destination (so far I have only had to put in addresses and search for the mall). Putting in an address is simple, not simple enough to do while driving though, I tried. My favorite part is, if you don't take the route that they suggest, it will "recalculate" and give you the next route. I also love the part where you can just pick a stop near you. Let me explain. I am sitting in a parking lot for a job interview and I am very early. I want coffee. I push a button on the GPS, and tell it I want coffee. It tells me the closest one is 1 mile away, and off we go. I found a gem of a cafe in the middle of nowhere. I would have driven around and around looking for a place to get coffee if it wasn't for this feature. I also like the map versus the directions being listed feature. I can go either way, usually I like looking at the map best, it shows you where you are and where you will be turning. The directions part is just a list, good for long journeys. I also like that fact that the voice will remind you that you are turning around .3 miles beforehand, and then again before you have to turn. Helpful when you don't have 20/20 vision and can't see the street name coming up.
There isn't anything I don't like. I do wish it was a thinner unit, but I am sure that will come with advances in technology. Other than that, the unit is perfect and I don't leave home without it.
