Since my daughter's reading skills took off, I have been interested in getting her kids' magazine subscriptions. Most of the time I can try out a magazine before buying with a free issue from the company or I can pick up a few issues at the local library. This is one that we did just that and then decided not to purchase the subscription. With so many great magazines for kids out there, this one just was not that great for my daughter's abilities. A little too simple! I would recommend this magazine only for non-readers and prior to pre-K. I did like that it focuses on pre-K skills so would be helpful if your child is learning them!
What we loved about this magazine:
*My daughter loved the pull-out animal cards and has hung many on her wall. She also stuck a few of her favorites in her wallet. They are cardboard with a glossy sheen to them with facts about the animals on the back of each card.
*Ease of ordering online is available with a credit card or later billing options.
*Magazine for younger non-reading children: 3-6 years old.
*Science hands on activity to do at home in each issue.
*Free Online website has similar activities and articles for little kids.
*Fun mazes and games for younger kids.
*Short story with picture symbols make reading fun!
*Science experiments with actual pictures of the process and simple instructions.
*Learning about other cultures and how people live in other countries. Pictures of the type of dress they wear and the animals that are common in the area.
*Many learning activities for rhyming, matching, counting, reading, science, and nature. Preschool learning in a fun way with animals and nature facts thrown in.
*Bright colored pictures of animals.
*Pages in the magazine as well as the cover are made of thicker paper and are glossy, so harder to tear for little hands.
*Many pictures of baby animals in each issue so a huge cuteness factor!
*Younger kids can get their own mail!
What we disliked about this magazine:
*The cost is high at $15 for 6 issues in a yearly subscription.
*Short time this magazine will appeal to kids. They will outgrow the content early on.
*A little too simple so children do not get much out of this magazine and it's articles on animals.
*Smaller size to this magazine at about 6" by 6" make it easy to handle for small kids but also easy to miss in the mail. Or mistake as a pamphlet.
*Only 23 pages long make this a quick read or flip through for kids. Not really worth the price. Even the simple games won't take but a moment or two to complete. Larger pages might have made the activities longer to do.
Final say:
I do recommend this magazine for preschoolers who need help with preschool learning activities but don't expect this magazine to last long in your household. Your child will quickly outgrow it. I would recommend for ages 1 year old through preschool age. The best part of this magazine is the animal cards that children love to save and hang up. Besides that, the animal and nature facts are a little too simple for kids over 5ish. On the small side, this magazine will be quickly discarded by kids each issue.
