Author's Review

Soul Calibur. Everyone's heard of it. If you haven't, there's no better time to. Soul Calibur III is possibly the best in the Soul series since the first game. Soul Calibur II was great, don't get me wrong, but it kind of lacks the same replay value that Soul Calibur III has.

Gameplay: 10 out of 10

The gameplay is absolutely grand! If you've played the previous installments of the series, you're reintroduced to the same lightining fast gameplay as ever before. I'm not sure where this fits, but there are 3 new characters.

There is Zasalamel, who bears an odd resembalance to Westley Snipes in Blade. He wields a awesome scythe. That's all I can say, because the man speaks for himself. He rocks.

There's Setsuka, who isn't as good as Zasalamel, what with her limited range. She uses an Iai sword hidden in the stalk of her Japanese parasol. She's powerful but has short range.

Then there's Tira, the breath of fresh air to the bad guys. She wields possibly the coolest weapon ever, a ring blade. She too has limited range, but not as limited at Setsuka's. She is a low tier character, but with persistance and determination, she can be mastered. I suggest that beginners do not start out with Tira, as she can be very difficult to control.

There's a couple new modes too. For the first time ever, Soul Calibur III brings in a character creation/customization mode. If you've ever wanted to create your dream character, now's the time to utilize this tool. Give them a class, a weapon, and some cool threads, and you're ready for your tale of souls and swords.

There is also a sort of RPG, Chronicles of the Sword. It's good. You can, again, utilize the character creation system to create your main character in the storyline, and you're ready to go. I haven't played this mode often, but its interface is handled well.

Graphics: 10 out of 10

'Bout as good as they're gonna get on your PS2. The characters and backgrounds are rendered very nicely. Even with Tira's hideous green outfit, and Kilik's cylinder shaped weapon, every polygon looks smooth as you're kicking the souls out of Nightmare.

Sound: 10 out of 10

I've ALWAYS loved the Soul series' finely orchestrated music, and III is no exception. The music is beautiful, and if you don't believe me, go to Setsuka's "lotus" stage and listen to Ephemeral Dream.

Overall: 10 out of 10

The game just plain rocks. If you didn't pick up 2006's Soul Calibur III from Namco, it's a must have and a great add to your PS2 game collection.
