How excited can the average computer user get about their monitor? :)
Breakdown of my rating:
Picture Quality: 4
Feature Set: 5
Manuals: 2
Performance: 4
However, I do really enjoy my NEC Multisync. Here are a few features I really like:
1. Sleek black look -- there is something rather modern about the black case and the glowing green "MultiSync" label on the front.
2. Power-saving mode -- when the monitor doesn't receive a signal from the computer, it powers down into a low-drain mode (using 1/3 the power).
3. Quality picture -- I am using a GeForce2 MX video card with this monitor and it seems to handle just nicely.
4. Near-flat screen -- the glass is just about flat which is, I find, easier on the eyes. Also, this reduces distortion near the edges.
There is a whole suite of settings that you can play with, all accessible from an on-screen menu (OSM). Most of these functions I just don't know how to use, but they include:
1. Moire Canceler
2. Convergence control
3. Corner correction -- adjust when the corners of the screen are skewed
4. "Globalsync" -- a feature allowing you to adjust the brightness of each corner of the screen.
5. Specific Color Control -- adjust the red, blue, and green intensity individually.
All of these features mean that if you have the need, you can make the adjustments on your monitor. Sometimes, with some video cards, selecting a high resolution does some funky stuff to the video signal. With a monitor this versatile, you can be sure you can get the most out of your equipment.
However, it would have been nice if the manual was more verbose in their description of the features, when to use them, what to look for. The website is slightly more helpful. Perhaps there's a general How-To out there.
The only negative I can think of is that there are two horizontal lines, each appearing 1/3 the way from the top and bottom edges. These lines look like an overlap of scans or a gap...I can't tell. I don't know if this is typical for this model. I only notice it when I'm looking for it and is only really noticeable when there is a solid background near these areas.
I use my computer to play games, edit photos (for home use), keep my financial books, and do some programming.
I got this monitor with a $50 rebate.
