John Ford's Untouched Pre-Release Version Tops Zanuck's Final Version~ |
|||
|
Pros: loved everything in film; two versions, audio commentary, documentary; bonus disc
Cons: Frontier Marshal is only okay
The Bottom Line: This is a western with a timeless, endearing quality that can be enjoyed as long as you live.
Review: This is probably not known by many fans of 1946s My Darling Clementine, but the final version is not the version that John Ford directed. Executive Producer Darryl F. Zanuck caved in to the wishes of two thousand people who attended the ...

Pros: Fonda, Ford's direction, cinematography
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: Western Noir
Review: Many films based on historical fact must be changed in order to be entertaining. Sometimes the changes, while noticeable, actually help the film ("The Untouchables"). Sometimes, the changes hurt ("America Outlaws"). In the case of this movie, John Ford ...

Gunfight at OK Corral |
|||
|
Pros: Absolutely wonderful cinematography
Cons: Hokey story, nonetheless, it works!
Review: "My Darling Clementine" is John Ford's fictionalized account of events leading up to and including the Gunfight at the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp and company faced the Clanton gang in the Old West's most famous gunbattle.

Pros: cast, story, cinematography
Cons: exaggerated, melodramatic characters
Review: One of the great American myths is the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which took place in the small Western town of Tombstone, Arizona in 1882. While the shootout did take place, the event has served mainly as a starting point for endless Hollywood...

Pros: Fonda, cinematography, sets
Cons: Horrendous liberties with real historical events, a bit long and a bit dramatic
The Bottom Line: I expected more from Ford and Fonda. The silly liberties with history ruined it for me.
Review: I love old movies. I love Westerns. This is one "classic" film I hadn't seen yet. I have to say, I didn't miss much. My Darling Clementine is about Tombstone Arizona, the infamous gunfight, the forged friendship between Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday ...
