"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"... This is Quality Film-Making

by   updateghost , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 7, 2004
Pros: Rains, Stewart, Capra; climax.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: A brilliant classic, through and through.
Review: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is, and I say this with most sincerity, one of the most amazing movies I've seen in a long time. For what seemed like epochs, my heart longed for a truly great movie to come and capture it. Then, one day, when ...

Two classics While ya Work.. #1

by   PKWBassGuy ,  Feb 17, 2004
Pros: Stunning script and performances.
Cons: Yes cheesy in places, concerning inconclusive ending.
The Bottom Line: A wonderful classic, that both is a charming Curio of the past AND relevant to politics of the present.
Review: ( If you have already Read my Review of "dinner"---h ttp://www.epinions.com/content _130132381316.. You can skip this part.) TBR stands for now two things in my book life. As we alleged literati say in the book ...

This was re-made as WHO goes WHERE?

by   isinga ,  Oct 21, 2000
Pros: Everything about it
Cons: Absolutely none.
Review: It's true! They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I just wish to Hades that they'd leave cinematic jewels such as Mr. Smith Goes To Washington out of it. You-know-who actually did a re-make of this movie with the title...

MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON: AS RELEVANT TODAY AS IN 1939

by   BR-549.5 ,  Sep 23, 2000
Pros: A powerful and important film that deserves your attention
Cons: Needs to be seen by a wider audience than classic film fans.
Review: A famous expression says, "the more things change, the more they stay the same". Very true, and in the case of Frank Capra's classic black and white film starring Jimmy Stewart, things haven't changed that much in the nations capitol since...

Mr. Smith where are you now?

by   skidmark2k ,  Nov 2, 2002
Pros: Jimmy Stewart. Storyline that reinforces why we're Americans.
Cons: His ascension to the Capital is somewhat hard to believe, even for the time period.
The Bottom Line: Great movie for anyone old enough to understand the concepts that America was built on, and what it means to stand on principle.
Review: What a classic picture. It seems like as a body of work, Jimmy Stewart's body of work can probably be looked at as the story of one of the top 2 or 3 actors of all time. His everyman quality shines in most pictures, but here, this quality is perfectly...

Mr. Smith, all-American hero

by   peppyj716 ,  Jan 4, 2002
Pros: Great all-American story, great performances by Jimmy Stewart and the rest of the cast
Cons: Can't think of any!
The Bottom Line: Two thumbs up! An inspiring story with great performances by the entire cast. Still relevant to today's political climate.
Review: I first saw this movie in my high school government class, and I thought it was sooooo boring.

Then, I saw it one night on TV when I was in college, a time when I started getting really interested in history and politics. My eyes were glued...

Mr. Stewart in a simpler time

by   cdwrites ,  Jan 15, 2000
Pros: It's an excellent film, in every aspect.
Cons: Subjectively, I don't see any cons.
Review: Capra's classic film is from a time where ideals and standing on moral principles were clearcut, and less complicated. It reflected a wholesomeness and faith in right and wrong that is, sadly, quite blurred these days.

Capra is a legend for a...

One Man's Voice

by   andaryl ,  Oct 15, 2008
Pros: Excellent story, inpirational, great performances
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: An American classic, of historic importance. Entertaining and heart warming. An essential movie.
Review: Released in 1939, Mr. Smith goes to Washington is a movie of high critical acclaim. At the time it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning Best Screenplay. It was voted #29 on the AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list, which is the reason it was on ...

Revisiting A Classic

by   jphalt ,  Jun 2, 2000
Pros: Compelling script and performances; Still as relevant today as on its initial release
Cons: Badly-paced opening & chaotic finish mar an otherwise excellent picture
Review: We all know what we find when we browse through the "Classics" section of our local video store: A lot of old movies. If a film is in black & white, or if it predates 1960, it will almost certainly be filed there. But "old" and...

Pros: This movie has a great cast, acting, story, and direction. It is very interesting!
Cons: None!!! :)
Review: I really enjoyed this movie. Great actors include: James Stewart, Jean Arthur, and Claude Rains. Directed by Frank Capra, this 1939 film follows the story of a common man who is suddenly elected into the Senate. He then writes his own bill which ...
