Monster Power HTS5100 Surge Suppressor
Date of Review: Sep 15, 2003
The Bottom Line: If you have more than a couple thousand into your A/V system, then I would consider this a must have to protect and get the most out of your investment.
Having invested thousands of dollars in my home entertainment system I became concerned about protecting all that equipment from power line damage. I have in the past had equipment damaged by both lightning and from high current spikes the Power Company had sent me. My initial quest was just to find some high quality power line protection. I am also getting ready to buy a HDTV Plasma set and wanted high quality protection and conditioning for that too. While in the video store I came across the Monster Power HTS5100 for $599.00, which seem like a lot of money to spend on power line protection. The sales agent said it did much more and considering what I have invested thought I would give it a shot under the principal "you usually get what you pay for." Before hooking it up I made note of the picture quality on my TV, which always had some flicker and noise, figured just poor digital cable. After hooking the HTS5100 into my system, I was really amazed at the difference this made in the TV picture and later after much critical listening also the quality of the sound from the system. I was quite skeptical that this would do anything, but the result in what I could see right away could not be denied. I figured if it had helped the picture so much, it could not be hurting the sound either. Over the next few DVD's I watched, I notice a significant improvement in the sound quality too, clearer and just more natural like sound. I am not an audiophile, so I don't know how to describe it, except that I thought I was listening to a brand new and different sound system. The whole experience was very impressive and I consider it one of the best purchases I have made for my system. After all, you invest a lot of money into a sound and video system, and if you are not getting out of it all that it can deliver, then you have just wasted a lot of money. I have always used high quality Monster Cable cables for that same reason. The HTS5100 really made the audio and video come alive in a surprising way and it certainly meets my original objective of just providing protection to my system. Twice this week during storms with the power flicking on and off, I said, "Man, I am glad that Monster Power protection is in my system today!" The bonus being an unexpected and surprising level of improvement in both sight and sound!
