The need for SPEED!

When I replaced my daughter's computer she wanted a CD recorder so I gave her mine and went shopping. I have to admit I did very little research so luck was involved as much as anything in unearthing this little gem. Appearance is just like every other CD-R on the market except for the compact disc logo, if you look closely you'll see "Ultra speed" along the right side. Headphone jack is on the lower left with the volume control and operation LED. To the extreme right is the eject button. I thought about listing the lack of transport controls (FF, play, etc.) as a con but this really is a writer and I never used them on the drives that did have them. As a side note, my first 2 CD drives were Mitsumi drives back when they still cost a fortune. Mitsumi was the first company to bring a non-caddy drive to market at a reasonable price.

This thing is extremely fast, it will burn an entire 700Mb CD in under 3 minutes! The 2Mb buffer helps quite a bit. In my opinion, Mitsumi made 2 design decisions that make this a very capable writer... they included hardware based burn protection and they limited the CD-RW speed to 24x. Limiting the speed may not seem like a good thing but after reading a few test reports it seems as though CD-RW media gets a bit dodgy at very high speeds. Overall an excellent drive and an outstanding performer at the very modest price I paid.
