On the night of May 24th, it was time to see one of the most highly anticipated Summer 2000 releases: Mission Impossible 2. With John Woo directing, I knew the action was going to be even more sizzling than MI 1 (you may have seen John Woo's work in Broken Arrow, Face Off or Hard Target). With my ticket in hand and a large Cherry Coke and extra buttery popcorn, I was ready for the movie to begin. And it delivered.
The plot of this movie was kept simple, a scientist working at a Bio-tech firm had created a new influenza virus (modified some existing flu viruses) to create a highly deadly "Chimera" virus. The reason was to generate massive profit, as the Bio-tech firm would be the only company with a vaccine, so it would infect the population and then get rich off of vaccinating the people.
It seems that a special team was sent in to get this virus and destroy it, however this operative went AWOL and stole the virus instead and intended to blackmail the company for millions of dollars.
Here's were Tom Cruise and his crew comes in: they need to regain control of the virus and the vaccine to keep the public safe. He assembles his team (Ving Rhames plays one of the good guys) and with the help of a sexy double agent, prepares to take back the virus.
The plot is kept very simple (unlike the previous MI movie, where the good guys play bad guys and the bad guys are the good guys and some people are triple agents), and a similar "hanging from the ceiling" and face masks special effects are once again deployed. This time the plot works, we aren't caught up with 'wait is he a good guy' or any of that. The bad buy is bad, and we know he isn't just playing around.
This movie is 2 hrs and 6 minutes of pumping adrenalin, non stop action with some very "Matrix-esque" special effects. However, the end result is one of the most amazing summer action movies you're going to see: car chases, gun fights, awesome kung-fu (nothing to unvbelievable) and one of the sweetest motorcycle scenes I have EVER seen.
This movie is a 9.5/10, and I highly recommend this to ANY one, even people disappointed with the first MI (remember, the plot is kept SIMPLE here, so you can relax and watch the awesome explosions).
