Author's Review
I bought this album when I was in college. I had heard the single 'It's a Fine Day' on the radio as a newly released single. I decided to take a risk and purchase the cd based solely on hearing that one song. I was not disappointed, to say the least!
I didn't know that the cd 'Mind Fruit' would be the best cd that I had purchased in my college years, and one of my all time favorites. The cd was unlike anything I had heard before it. The group Opus III masterfully combines techno, ambient, and a hauntingly beautiful voice.
The first single 'It's a Fine Day' is a great song. It sounds a little repetitve at first, but it never seems to bother me. The music contains a danceable beat with a harp like instrument playing in unison with other techno-like sounds. and Kirsty's voice (the lead singer), is more of an instrument than simply a voice.
Talk to The Wind is a great follow-up to 'It's a Fine Day'. This song is a little less repetitive, and quite beautiful.
Flow is simply an instrumental extension of the previous song. It is ok, but I usually skip this part since it is nothing exceptional. It is, however, a good indicator of what was to come in the next cd in terms of the instrumental skills of Opus III.
Stars in My Pocket is a slower paced song. Kirsty sings in a very high pitch in this song, showing off a wider range of her voice. The music in the background makes you feel that you are floating in space. A great song.
Sea People is an interesting song in that most of the song Kirsty's voice is in a hushed whisper. The music makes me feel like I am in the jungle for some reason.
Evolution Rush is one of my favorites on the cd. It is the fastest paced song on the cd. In parts of the song, it sounds like Kirsty is speaking in tongues. The song doesn't really have any lyrics to speak of. Once again, Kirsty's voice is used more like an instrument than to sing lyrics. The result is stunning.
Into this Universe is another slower paced song, with bongos. In this song, Kirsty is not so much singing, but more telling a story in a hushed voice (but not in a whisper as in Sea People). This song also has a great instrumental doppler effect in the background.
Up is primarily an instrumental song with Kirsty using her voice as a high-pitched instrument. This song is a bit faster paced than the others. One instrument in the song sounds similar to an animal howling.
Alzir is solely an instrumental song. It is a beautiful song, and the last pure song in the cd. It also seems to be the only song with a guitar in it (or at least an instrument that sounds awfully like a guitar!).
Outro is essentially a joke. It starts out similar to the beginning of Stars in My Pocket only to be interrupted by a band member saying "We've got enough of that stuff already!".
Mind Fruit is a great cd for when you are in the mood to daydream. Each song is like a landscape, and the song can take you there. Opus III released another cd after this one titled Guru Mother, which was good, but not as good as this masterpiece was. If you can only get one of Opus III two full length cds, I would choose Mind Fruit. Other artists of this kind are difficult to find, but the closest examples would be any of the Bjork cds, or Madonna's Ray of Light cd.
