Truly the best fighter out there

by   sndfrddy ,   Apr 5, 2008

Pros:  Great fighting style, good fatalities, Motor Kombat nice for variety, difficult if you want it.

Cons:  predictable story line, repetitive at rare occasions

The Bottom Line:  Great game with satisfying fights

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Overview:
This installment if the MK series is by far the most impressive. New options can get any player the best choices. No other fighter is this bloody , or this satisfying.

Graphics:
Armageddon's graphics have come a long way from the digitalized people in a 2D background. The characters have smooth looks and VERY fluid moves, Midway perfected this always 0alive flaw and now it really feels as if a fight was really happening. Textures in the arena are very clear and realistic, even buildings from far away have a feel if really being there.

Audio:
The games audio has a great sound to it, the music has that fighting feel to it, like those action movies where the two fighters stare each other down. The Screams and yells of the fighters pain or victory sounds very realistic. My two complaints though, is that even when you kill your opponent, he/she still is screaming bloody murder. And that during combat all of the males sound the same, and all of the females sound the same. But that's a detail that soon gets pushed to the back of your mind.

Gameplay:
One great aspect of this game is that Midway had the whole general public in mind when designing the controls of this game. 2-3 button presses make up the majority of any characters' arsenal. New players can amaze veterans with a flip i the air while flinging you opponent 13 meters across the field to make them look like a pro, but really only pressing 2 buttons. 62 characters is what caught my eye on this game. They basically took every character from every MK game and stuffed them in with some new looks. Blaze, for instance, is no longer a nimble little Human Torch spinoff, but now a hulking brute made up molten lava thats easily twice the size of any character. And I'm fine with that. Plus Kreate-a-Fighter adds even more diversity into the game. Story-wise, the story has a nice plot that keeps going for a long time. The occasional one-on-one battles later on are very difficult. And you really have to strike first and never let down. Characters and accessories for Kreate-a-fighter can be unlocked in Konquest(story mode), as well as arenas and music. The only real downside to the story is that it was very predictable. And half-way through I found myself saying "Okay he's gonna get captured from (insert enemy name here) soon....yep there we go, lets escape now." But everyone knows the reputation of any MK game is the senseless violence and over exaggerated blood spillage. And this one lives up to it's name proudly. Hard stabs to the face gives your opponent a shower in his own blood with seemingly gallons being dumped all over the place. You might think that it is really gross and unnessecery for all this blood, but it really adds to the whole atmosphere. I find myself whooping and taunting after I spill about all of my opponents blood content on his feet. But if you ask "What's the heart of Mortal Kombat?" to anybody who's even heard of Mortal Kombat, they will say without a pause "the Fatalities" This is what makes Mortal Kombat so popular. After you win 2 rounds (or the majority of rounds in a session, like 2 out of 3) I voice says "Finish Him!" or "Finish Her!" What that basically means is that once you win, you don't just walk away and let your opponent cry on the ground, heavens no, you rip any and every body part from them before time runs out, and the more moves you make during this fatality stage, the more bonus points you get. And you kill your opponent with a finisher move that can very greatly, but mostly stays toward the head. This are vary from squishing your opponent's head until it explodes, or my personal favorite, ripping the spine out and holding it in the air like a trophy. Boss character finishers are quite...different. My favorite being the boss roars an supersonic roar at the opponent until the enemy explodes. Plus, Kreate-a-fatality is very fun and creative. Arenas Have many death traps as well, hit them hard enough, and they will fly into a grinder with blood and guts flying everywhere. Ahhh...so satisfying. So knowing the traps are there keeps you attacking viciously, but also trying to herd your opponent right into a trap while he does the same. A nice little addition to this is Motor Kombat. I racing mini-game that feature favorite from the MK franchise. this is also very violent as you very to band your opposing racers to their deaths in cliffs or just giant stuff that smashes you.

Closing comments:
Armageddon delivers a satisfying blow to any competitor in the fighting genre. You can bring this to a friends house or to a party and have the whole house whooping and hollering at a particuarly good death.
