Author's Review
Midtown Madness is subtitled Chicago Edition, which I can only hope means that there will be sequels that take place in different cities.
Normally, you wouldn't expect Microsoft to be a force in the games department, but this one is a surprise. Its not too often there is a racing game that is this much fun, that doesn't take itself too seriously.
The basic idea is, using different cars, you must race around Chicago, in a number of different ways. There are 4 different categories.
The first is checkpoint. Basically you have to do a number of laps around a closed off circuit within the city. This is probably the least challenging.
Checkpoint gets better. You are given freedom to get around, so you can basically choose your own route. Whoever makes it through all the checkpoints first wins the race.
Blitz requires you to make it from point A to point B in a certain time limit. This can be very challenging, as it often requires you to find the perfect route.
Also, there is a Cruise mode. Basically you can pick any car, and drive around the whole map. This can be fun sometimes and it doesn't ruin the rest of the game at all.
The one drawback is the limited number of cars. I can partially understand this, there are a few cars and each plays a role. i.e. one is good at taking damage, another is good at cornering etc.
Still, I enjoy having a wide selection.
I have to appreciate the approach this game takes though. It's unlike any other driving game I've played. The graphics are very diverse and several Chicago landmarks are present. It's fun driving around in an area that feels real.
