Author's Review
I have owned a Zune 30 and this is my second Zune, and third MP3 Player. I purchased this as a replacement to my Zune 30, as I wanted something more compact, and I don't regret it.
Ok, first off, the device is very easy to use. You slide your thumb up or down the touchpad, which looks and works like a laptop touchpad, NOT like a Apple Computer iPod's Clickwheel. The UI is also very simple, and it has 7 options on the main page, Music, Videos, Pictures, Social, Radio, Podcasts, and Settings.
Music: Under music, you can select to view music by artist, playlist, songs, genres, or albums by sliding your finger on the touchpad sideways.
Videos: Basically shows the videos, and has 2 categories, videos, and music videos. However, you aparently have to download them from the Zune Marketplace, and can't just down them from YouTube.
Pictures: It shows the pictures, which are organized into folders, exactly the same as you have them stored on your PC. You can also sort them by name or date.
Social: The Social is the wireless sharing area of the Zune. You click, and it starts to scan for other Zunes. It's also where your received music is storred. Now, before you receive a song, you have to confirm that you want it, so the zune isn't very good for walking around and just trying to send songs to anyone within range, it's more for sharing with friends.
The Device: The Zune is a very sturdy device. I've dropped it a number of times, and it's still working perfectly fine. It's glass screen is also very scratch resistant. The earbuds are also better than the first gen, but they arn't exactly great. Also, it's missing game and audiobook support, but that should be addedd by the end of the year.
Software: The software is better than the first, but has a few bugs. For example, sometimes it will sync the same video podcasts over and over, so I have it multiple times on the Zune. However the UI is excellent. The marketplace also is very nice.
Wrapp up:
Well, the Zune is a solid competitor to the iPod, and I'd prefer my Zune any day to an iPod Nano.
