To get the best use of this, you'll need to connect it to your USB port, and if you don't have a USB port, get one... Hot-swappable capability simply rules.
Optical tracking = no calibration = quick game starts. I always hated having to calibrate my analog sticks, just one more annoying step which optical technology has solved.
The grip fits my hand very well, with a smooth, organic-looking groove for the thumb.
The base IS a tad large, unless you have a flat surface to set it on. It can a bit uncomfortable to place in your lap.
The trigger is easy to fire, in some cases too easy. The thumb buttons have a more positive feel to them, as does the hat switch.
The four base buttons can be tricky to use, due to their position forward of the grip. The extra "shift" button can effectively double the number of functions you can have, but it's set too far back to be of real use.
The 8-way hat switch is too sensitive to be used as an 8-way hat, except in changing viewpoints. The hat should be assigned no more than 4 functions unless you have an extremely precise thumb.
The configuration program lets you easily set up keystrokes for each button. Multi-keystroke macros can be set up, as well. It also allows you to create and save separate profiles for each game you have (or a different profile for multiple users of a single game).
Stick motion is smooth and uniform in any direction. The twisting motion (yaw) can be a bit tiring on the wrist, but is useful in flightsim games where you can engage the rudder separately from the ailerons, for that extra edge in a dogfight.
This stick is great in Descent: Freespace (space combat sim). This game in particular has a ton of commands, all of which can be easily saved to a profile and changed at one's leisure.
