I find the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader to be a real timesaver. I have trouble remembering all of the passwords for different websites and this device eliminates the need for me to remember.
The reader doesn't replace your password with your fingerprint, you can still enter your password instead of using the device, it merely enters your login information for you when you touch the reader.
Setup is fast. Install the Digital Persona software that comes with the device and plug it into an open USB port. It then prompts you to register your fingerprints. It suggests registering multiple fingers just in case something happens to one of your fingers. However, it has remarkably good recognition. I sliced one of my fingers while cooking and it could still read that fingerprint. It also only less than a second to recognize your fingerprint.
To setup registration on websites and programs that require a password, simply go to the login screen and place one of your registered fingers on the reader. A dialog box appears and prompts you to enter your login and password for the site. Once you do that, every time you are prompted to login to that site, just place your finger on the reader and you are automatically logged in.
It works great for logging into your home computer if you have multiple users. Each user can register their own fingerprints and login to their account with only a touch of the reader pad. It also enables fast user switching, so if someone else is logged in, all you have to do is touch the reader and you are switched to your account, without logging them off.
Cleaning the device is easy. All it takes is strip of scotch tape placed over the reader and all the dust just lifts off.
One of the downsides of the device is listed right on the box--"Microsoft Fingerprint Reader should not be used for protecting sensitive data like financial information or for accessing corporate networks." Frankly, I would love to have the device log me into my bank account and credit cards because those are the hardest passwords to remember. But I understand that it would be a huge security risk if those types of passwords where stored on your computer.
Another downside is that the reader itself emits a really bright red light, very similar to the underside of an optical mouse, except about 4X brighter. It also flickers. This is really annoying, especially if you use your computer in the dark.
Also, other reviewers have commented that the Microsoft Fingerprint reader doesn't work with the Firefox web browser (surprise!). This is no longer the case. Install the Fingerfox extension and it works great!.
Bottom line is that the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader delivers all that it promises. It provides a convenient solution to remembering passwords for the home user.
