Some People Are What the Times Demand

Date of Review:  Nov 12, 2005
The Bottom Line: Highly recommended both for general entertainment (for those who enjoy war epics) and as a general introduction to the Irish movement for independence.
Review: Neil Jordan has made some pretty good films – when he has managed to steer clear of Hollywood. His debut film, Angel (1982), was a daring treatment of violence and murder in the underworld. He followed that with the innovative The Company of Wolves...

Flawed, but Still Worth Viewing

Date of Review:  Feb 15, 2002
The Bottom Line: A good film for students of Irish history and those interested in the events of the Irish independence struggle. Don't expect realism, but still worth the watching.
Review: This is not history, but it is awfully convincing. The story and legend that has grown up around Michael Collins is rather a fetching idea for a movie, and for the most part Neil Jordan does a tremendous job in portraying the "Big Fella".

A forgotten hero of the twentieth century

Date of Review:  Apr 23, 2000
Review: In January of 1922, after more than seven centuries of brutal occupation, the British Empire withdrew from Ireland. The rebellion which finally forced the British to grant Irish independence was largely the work of one man: Michael Collins...

The Man Who Would Have Freed Ireland

Date of Review:  Mar 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: Flawed Masterpiece benefits from great craftsmanship, good performances, suffers from the vile, icky Julia Roberts... :=8/
Review: Happy St. Patty's Day!! :=8D

In celebration, the MooCow has chosen one of his favorite Irish films, Neil Jordan's excellent, cowtraversial epic "Michael Collins".

"Michael Collins" is a bold, sweeping look at one of Ireland's...

He Made Ireland.

Date of Review:  Jan 27, 2003
The Bottom Line: An outstanding film about a man who'd been forgotten to great extent by history.
Review: Michael Collins is about the man who is largely responsible for Irish independence. This is a fantastic movie and it mystifies me why it didn't get more notice at the box office and in the Oscars. The acting is superb, especially Liam Neeson's towering...
