Does not work with Radio Slaves, difficult menus

Date of Review: May 25, 2007

I received the Metz 58 AF-1 and actually had to read the manual just to figure out how to add compensation, switch to manual mode and change power output. Given that I have never opened my 580EX manual that is a bad sign especially as these important and regularly used functions are buried very far into the menus. It also has a plastic shoe which does not impress me.
Changing compensation or manual output require you to push a button 5 times just to get to the point where you can make adjustments with further button pushes. And did I mention that IT WILL NOT WORK WITH POCKET WIZARDS?! Are you as surprised as I am? I did not see anything in their literature about this and am now returning it.
Metz needs to get their act together. Any flash that can't be used with radio slaves and is this slow to operate manually is obviously not targeted to the professional market. It can work in the wireless TTL mode that is totally worthless in most outdoor situations or any situation where line of sight is interrupted or over 50FT.
