Author's Review
By now, anyone who's anyone has heard of Metal Gear. This game spawned the entire genre of spy games, and Konami continued the legacy with the excellent Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation. Sharing both it's flaws and strengths, the Windows version manages to excel.
The graphics on Metal Gear have always been excellent. The techniques used to convey the atmosphere of the scene on it's original 32 Bit console still remain top notch today. This is in part due to the fact that this game actually improves on the terrific Playstation version by including several high-resolution modes that bring the game to a whole new level of detail. On top of that, the characters themselves are striking in the painstaking detail. The only problem is that (unlike more recent games) they never move their lips.. Spooky.
The gameplay is another hit. Even today, it marks a high point in intrigue and control. From luring guards to their doom, to hiding in a box, the game is realistic enough to be fun. However, I have to warn you that the guards tend to really be stupid unless you set the game on Extreme mode. One glaring problem that was fixed in this game was the First Person View. In the PSX version, you could look around, but not shoot or move in First Person. In this game, you can look, move shoot.. and crouch, all in your own view. Switching between First and Third person becomes a very valuable technique at times.
The sound is a VERY high point here. Everything from the subtle tones of infiltration to the tense pulsing "discovered" music just lets you know this is way more than a game. It's an experience.
