Professional Opinion

by   a-parke2 ,  May 18, 2001
Pros: Comfortable and Powerful!
Cons: No longer in production.
The Bottom Line: The 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 is infinitely preferable to the front-drive roller skates that pass for luxury sport coupes today!
Review: I buy and sell automobiles for a living. For the past several years I have leased a brand new mid-size sedan every two or three years. With automobile lease rates and residuals becoming less desirable every year, last year I decided to "curb" the best...

buy a cougar

by   evilone_04901 ,  Jun 8, 2001
Pros: rides nice, looks great, lots of power, all of the options.
Cons: Rear wheel drive.
The Bottom Line: I would buy if I had to think about it again, just buy good winter tires.
Review: I love my Mercury Cougar XR7. My problem I have is finding a car that I like after owning this car. It has a V8, leather bucket seats, power everything, spoiler, big back seat, reclining power seats. The only thing I changed was the stereo. I would...

One major flaw

by   bigk3699 ,  Apr 24, 2001
Pros: Sharp looks, and power everything.
Cons: Very weak engines, and bad gas mileage to match.
The Bottom Line: Super charge it! It needs the power!
Review: This car rocks, the only thing that is wrong with it is its motor. The 3.8L V6 has a measly 145HP. The 4.6L V8 has a slightly better 205HP. The V6 should make 205. All in all, this is a great car, I've had my 96 since I bought and it runs great. Mine...

Great value

by   jeffm_00 ,  Oct 14, 2004
Pros: Good poor mans "luxury" car
Cons: Upper intake issues
The Bottom Line: Solid car, extremely good value.
Review: I bought my Cougar about a year ago for $3900 with 64k miles on the 4.6l (3.8l is garbage--unless you like changing gaskets). I drive it hard and get ~22mpg on the highway, city around 20mpg. Great car, especially for the money. I like the styling, ...
