GBA+RPG=A Great Combo

by   greendaydm ,   Jul 11, 2002

Pros:  Original RPG experience

Cons:  The story seems to be geared to the younger audience

The Bottom Line:  Original and fun, what else is there when it comes to games? Megaman Battle Network has both elements. So check it out!

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Megaman makes a nice leap from platform gaming into the RPG world. Since the early days on NES to the great system of SNES, and also PSX, and unfortunately a poorly made adventure on the N64.Megaman has been there. In Megaman Battle Network, you are Lan, a young 5th grader residing in the town of AC/DC. But it's not your regular town or schooling. It is the year 20xx, and developers have invented a "matrix"-like virtual world. Everybody has a PET or "Net navi" these PET's are your guide and defenders in the virtual world. Most electronic devices such as gamecubes, computers, and even vending machines allow you to "jack-in" to this "virtual world" and explore it's insides. But of course with every game there are villians, and this game is like any other. The villian? Well there isnt a single villian, more like a corperation. The WWW is a corperation set out to destroy the virtual world with viruses and eventually trying to destroy it all with something called "ENDGAME". The story is not very original, but it takes a backseat to one of the most original RPG fighting experiences.

Graphics

Pros:
The characters look very detailed, with anime style face graphics, and the worlds are very colorful and cheerful. The fighting scenes also have some great animations.
Cons:
There are pretty much no, character/environment interactions. Also the virtual world is very linear, and can get confusing.

Sound/Music

Pros:
The music is like any other megaman game in the series, catchy, and not repetitive.

Cons:
Probaly the most annoying part having to do with sound in an RPG, is the Text-sound. Which is, when talking to someone, when the text is printed on the screen it has to make the annoying sound of little beeps. It's not that big of a problem, just maybe something to change for the 3rd version of the game.

Replay Value
A perfect-sized RPG, not incredibly long that makes you give up after about the 30th hour, but just right. And of course there is a side-quest, which is, collecting battle chips! If your a pokemon freak, or just into collecting stuff, then collecting all 170+ chips is going to be a tough challenge.

Overall:
Finnaly a good game for GBA among all the trash and crappy game concepts. Although, I wouldnt say this game is for everyone. If you are not into RPG's then this game might suit you. But the RPG experience is original and refreshing, which might change the mind's of an RPG-nay sayer. Borrow or rent this for a few days, test it out. Then go buy it, it'll give you something to do in the hours of boredom.

~Peace
