Supplemental Nursing System

Date of Review: Jan 3, 2008

The Bottom Line:  This is worth trying if you already are breastfeeding successfully, just need to increase the volume. Pretty discouraging if baby is not latching on, yet.
I tried this when attempting to build up a supply of milk for my adopted baby. The hospital staff recommended it, and helped me get started.
To begin, you must put the system together, add milk, clip the tube to your clothing about shoulder level, tape the end of the tube on your breast near your nipple, then get baby latched on. Once the baby begins to suck, you must unhook the clip at the end to allow milk to flow into baby's mouth.

I found it was not practical to use in public - you have to open up your whole world to attach the tube in the correct position. I was not even comfortable using it in my home unless I was alone in my bedroom. Baby gets tired of waiting while you get it "just right."
You also have to adjust the height of the milk container to adjust the flow of milk. Too high, and the flow chokes the baby, too low and the flow is so slow, baby gets tired before emptying the milk. Just when everything is in place, baby starts to suckle, pulls away, and there's a flow of milk all over.
This product would be easier to use if you had 4 hands or if your partner is willing to help out. Might also be helpful if your supply of milk is a little low but infant already knows how to breastfeed well.

Recommended to buy: No

Pros
No nipple confusion, while increasing your own supply.
Cons
Awkward to use in public. Takes practice to get baby latched on.
