A great starter telescope

by   saminium ,   Jun 25, 2005

Pros:  Quality: High, Ease of Use: Great, Universe: Awaits.

Cons:  Nothing significant that affects my enjoyment of the sky.

The Bottom Line:  If you want to go see things in the sky tonight, this is the scope for you.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Summary
This was the least expensive reflector in the 5" range that also included a GOTO feature. The telescope has functioned wonderfully and I am quite pleased with it, and highly recommend it.

Background
As an astronomy enthusiast, I finally decided to purchase a telescope. I wanted enough power to see cloud bands on Jupiter and the rings of Saturn. The GOTO function was another thing I wanted, for ease of use (and laziness).

The setup
The telescope is easily assembled with minimal mechanical aptitude required. The telescope aligns itself if you can level it and point it in the general direction of the north star. I wasn't a believer, but it worked great. You can, of course, train the scope yourself and hunt things down on your own.

The scope
With a clear atmosphere I could readily see cloud bands on Jupiter, and its four largest moons were crisp pinpoints. The butterfly cluster, and Ptolemy's cluster were brilliant. Resolution is sharp and focus is simple.

The electronics
The Autostar (standard feature) can take you to any place in the sky and it is reasonably accurate. I noticed the scope did not always 'bullseye' the target, but it came close enough to work VERY well.
