Author's Review
I am the proud new owner of a 2002 Miata and the pure enjoyment of driving this car has motivated me to write this review and help spread the word. As written in another review, this car does seem to have a reputation of being a 'chick car', or even a 'gay car', but those who think this have not driven one or don't understand the idea behind the Miata. This is a roadster. It's a tiny, little, lightweight car that offers the perfect balance of speed, power, and handling. What sets this roadster apart from the classic European roadsters is it's legendary Japanese reliability. No oil stains in the driveway, no tinkering in the garage to get her running, she is always itching to be started and driven. I decided on this car to fit a specific idea of what I wanted in a car, and the Miata exceeds my expectations. I traded in my old 92 Toyota Cressida with 215k miles, after many years of reliable service. Though this car was comfortable and smooth-riding, it was not able to provide any driving enjoyment. The Miata is a big change from the sedan. Others are saying that this doesn't make a great daily-driver, but I am determined to dismiss that as I look forward to every moment in this car. Yes, it's a little cramped for a 6' driver, yes visibility is limited with the top up, yes the engine and road produce "noise", but this is all part of the Miata experience and it just wouldn't be the same without it. Because this will be my daily-driver, I opted for the LS model with Leather, Bose stereo, and the limited slip differential. The ultimate 'purists' may find these comforts unnecessary, but I think they only add to the overall "sweetness" of this car and the limited slip diff. helps keep the wheels on the road. As someone else stated, this car is the ultimate 'go kart' and it has fully restored the passion I once had for driving. You will become a better driver in this car - and that's what our roads need, better drivers! Zoom Zoom
Update: Forgot to mention... No automatic Miatas please! This car is meant to be shifted at the driver's control via a mechanical gearbox, not by hydraulic fluid at the car's discretion!
