2001 Mazda 626--a solid Japanese car for a US price
Pros:
Great car for the price, beats others in head-to-head value comparison.
Cons:
Could use more horsepower, seat comfort just average.
The Bottom Line:
Can't beat it for the price.

Author's Review
I recently purchased a barely-used Mazda 626 from Carmax (see that review for more info). I had done extensive research into similar sedans, including Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima and Maxima. I already expected a better deal on the Mazda since it didn't have the same name recognition or popularity, but I was surprised how much more you could actually get for the money.
I ended up paying less then $14,000 for a 626 with only 10,500 miles on it. This compared to over $16,000 for anything comparable, even those with 20,000 or 30,000 miles on them. I got less horsepower than an Accord, but otherwise the features stacked up head-to-head. For this price I got an automatic with A/C, keyless entry, a CD stereo that sounds awesome, power everything, anti-lock brakes, a split rear seat, and plenty of trunk space.
The car rides great for something so light and fuel-efficient and I don't have to walk up to 15 similar Camrys to find my car in the parking lot. The oscillating fan is a nice touch, as is the sunglasses holder that folds away behind the rear-view mirror. The front seat armrest has split compartment: the top can hold a cell phone, a map, pens or whatever, while the bottom has a 2nd power outlet, CD holders, and change slots.
On the downside, you won't be able to burn rubber when the stoplight turns green, though the car does accelerate very quickly once you're at interstate speed. The front seats could stand to be more comfortable: they seem to be built for the ever-expanding "wide load" American driver, without much side support. Noise from the outside is minimal, though the engine can be loud when accelerating. I haven't minded this though because I usually have the excellent stereo cranked anyway.
Gas mileage was 29 on my first tank of around-town and highway driving, which is above what is published. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and am glad to have a few extra grand I didn't have to finance.
