Our First Car

Pros: Great price, styling, stereo, and fuel economy

Cons: The 1.6 L engine mated with an automatic transmission has very little highway acceleration.

The Bottom Line: Great car. The perfect combination of low price, reliability, and sporty styling.

My wife and I are both university students who were in desperate need of a relatively inexpensive, reliable automobile. We shopped around but we kept hearing the same thing - The Mazda Protege could not be beat if cost, reliability and fuel economy were our primary concerns. So, we went ahead and purchased a used 99 Protege with 18000 miles on it for about $8,400 US. What a steal!

Our only complaints so far would be the lack of power on the highway; what seemed like premature font brake wear; and our constant battle to keep the windows clear of condensation in the winter. This is a very annoying problem. The rear windows seem like they are never clear of condensation when its cold outside and we've got the heater turned up.

All in all, I would highly recommend this car to anyone who is in need of a low cost, reliable automobile.
