Things to Consider Before Buying Front Loader
Date of Review: Feb 5, 2005
I own a two year old Maytag Neptune MAH6500 front loading washer that I purchased for its energy savings and huge load capacity. Here's what I've learned:
1. A service contract is absolutely a requirement. I rarely purchase contracts but I'm really glad I did in this case. I've had three very expensive service calls that were covered by Sears' Master Protection Agreement.
2. As with many newer, high efficiency front loaders, this bugger gets moldy/smelly if not used for 1-2 days. A good amount of black mildew shows up around the door gasket every 2-3 months.
Leaving the door open is supposed to help, but then the interior light and the electronic control panel stay lit up. Service also suggests running an empty load with bleach or vinegar and hot water. That negates some of the water and energy savings heavily touted with these units.
3. The matching washer and dryer work very well at cleaning and drying the clothes quickly. Perhaps Maytag will add some type of ventilation in the future to cure the mildew problem.
