I decided to buy a new oven because the one I had which was the original in the house, over 20 years old, only had the top element working. Decided to buy a new one instead of repairing the old one. I had never bought an oven before so this was all new to me. I shopped around at many different appliance stores and looked at many different brands of ovens. The criteria I had was, fitting the space in the wall in my kitchen--#1 and self cleaning--#1 to my husband (my oven cleaner). Other than those anything would be modern compared to the old Magic Chef I had. The space turned out to be a big obstacle, but the Maytag had many different sizes to choose from.
I ended up with the electric Maytag 5800, double oven, did not realize until shopping Maytag even did ovens and I love it. (They also offered a oven microwave combination.) Had a choice of black or white and I opted for black. I love many of it's features and they were easy to learn to use. It has a cook time where you can set the temperature and the amount of time it is to cook and it automatically turns off after the time has expired. The temperature is easy to set moves up or down (digitally) in 5 degree increments, in the top oven. The lower oven is controlled by a dial. There is a clock on the oven as well--my only complaint is that the clock has to be reset when the power goes off. Another thing I really like is that little heat escapes from this oven so your kitchen stays cool, even in our hot Texas summers. Also, the outside of the oven barely feels hot to the touch even when on a high temperature and has been cooking for a long period of time.
Have used the self-cleaning feature once, after Thanksgiving. It took a long time to do as all of them do and left a smell no one was happy with. Not sure if that is normal or not since I have never had a self-cleaning oven before. But the oven was spotless !!! Needed just a little extra touch with Bon Ami.
I love this oven and have no complaints, and have had it since August of 1999. I would recommend it to everyone.
