DiamondMax Plus 9, (6Y120M0)

Dead at 15 months.
I purchased this drive for a system I built for my son just over a year ago. For the most part the drive performed trouble free.... through the 1 year warranty period. A week or so ago the system began to lockup and sometimes the machine wouldn't boot at all, when it did many applications would not run or even re-install. The registry appeared to be corrupt. I had wanted to upgrade the system from Windows 2000 to XP anyways so this was as good a time as any. Not! I was unable to complete the setup on any attempt even after low-leveling it. The drive would just go unresponsive and a low-level format was the only way of getting it back once it did. Again, it would fail at some point during setup and I would find myself back at square one. Maxtor's diagnostics identified the drive as failing and provided only the diagnostic code "de99a27d" without a description of the failure. I couldn't turn up any info on the failure code either. After dropping the serial # in their website I find the drive was only 3 months past the warranty date. Do they know their product or what?

I wasn't going to get anywhere with this disk so suffice to say I purchased another disk for his system.... a 120G Seagate. I'll not purchase another Maxtor drive.

If your thinking about buying this drive DON'T! It's bad enough to lose all your data in the blink of an eye... having to shell out cold hard cash for a replacement just adds insult to injury.

Seagate Warranty on the same size drive: 5 years
