Product Review

Pro BMX or just another amaeture?

by   alan523 ,   Nov 2, 2001

Pros:  BMX, cool tricks

Cons:  Didn't live up to it's hype

The Bottom Line:  This Game is alright, but not the best.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

Matt Hoffman Pro BMX seemed to take forever to come out. I read about it a lot before it came out and sites were talking about how great it would be with the Tony hawk engine in it so I couldn't wait to go out and buy it.

First things first. There are plentry of great Pro's in this game including of coarse the living legend of BMX Matt Hoffman. Other's joining him in the game are Mike Escamilla, Keven Robinson, Simon Tabron, Rick Thorne, Dennie MCcoy, Joe Kowalski, and Cory Nastazio. Plenty of excelent talent in hear. Each person has some of there tricks that they are known for in real life as there speacial tricks. An example would be Matt Hoffmans Peacock air. Also there are a few secret players as well. Grandma and Tony Hawk him self.

Next thing you notice is the levels. The only level open beside the create a park levels that you make at first is the Hoffman Bike Factory. This level has it all. A great half pipe and bowl. Outside you have some dirt to ride. This is a good place to practice in to get the hang of tricks. I didn't play this level much because I wore it out in the Demo on Tony Hawk 2.

The Second level you get is the Construction yard. Plenty of places to get some good air and also pleanty of places to grind.

London Underground is the third level. Pipes, ramps, rails, glass to crash through. There is pleanty to do in this place.

Blue Torch Competition 1. The first compitions which is my favorite part of any of the games like this. This however is my least favorite level in the game. I would describe it to you but it's so dark I can hardley see so I just hit buttons and pray I win.

Park, New York City. Pleanty of good jumps and places to grind. Also little food carts to run off the paths. But be careful there's a peskey car that will run you over of you get in his way.

Sewage Treatment Plant. Despite the name this level isn't a load of crap. A big 21 foot vert ramp to get some mega air and plenty other place to get some as well. Long grindabale rails are also in this level.

La Habra, CA. This is a pretty fun level as well. You jump up to the roofs knocking off satilite dishes. You can grind from one roof to the next as well. @ of the builings right next to eachother have pools ontop of them and you can jump from roof to roof. Another vehicle down on the streets though to run you down, this time a street sweaper.

CFB(Crazy freakin Bikers) competition 2. This compitition is much better then the other. Plenty of light to see what's going on. In the middle there is a great street coarse to ride on. Of to the side is a big half pipe to get sick air in. Going around the coarse is a great dirt track. Pleanty of dirt ramps to get air off of.

There are 2 secret levels you can unlock. The first one is the infamous Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1's warehouse. Half Pipe, ramps along the walls, a taxi to jump and a nice rail to grind.

Another 1 is one of the parks from Tony Hawk one. It has a big eye ball bowl in it and is mainly a street riding area.

There's one more level you can get but I've only been able to get it with a game shark and don't kno if you can get it without. Any way it's the school from Tony Hawk 1. this place has pools and roofs to ride on a long stair rail grinds. Like I said I don't knwo if it's getable without a game shark but I thought I'd point that place out for those of you who have one.

If you get board with all of those levels your still allright. The park editor mode from Tony Hawk 2 was put in hear as well. They are the exact same. If you don't have the patients to build a great park then just load some premade one's from the game.

The Game play in the game is identical to the Tony Hawk games. This is good because it's easy to learn if you have played thouse games. If not it's still easy to master. X to jump,Triangle to grind, and Circle and square to do tricks in air. Sometime though I try to hit buttons for an air trick and nothing happens. I don't know if they have a differen't trick for every arrow and button combo.

The Music in this game is alright. They have such bands as Static X, Dead President, and Stone Rosses. The music though on this game can get on your nerves because it just doesn't seem to fit. I just hit mute and pop in a cd.

The Graphics in the game are good. The people, bikes, and most of the levels look great. Some of the tricks don't realy flow to well. A tail whip back flip happends so fast you have to take the part where it tells you what trick you just did's word for it.

All in all I'd say this is a pretty good game. It didn't live up to it's hipe, least for me. It's not my favorite BMX game but it's still a good one. I give it 5 out of ten stars.
