Frankenstein of Geneva

by   schockman ,  May 22, 2005
Pros: Beautiful, full of life, a classic masterpeice.
Cons: average special effects, sad.
The Bottom Line: It's the Truth of Frankenstein, you have to see it unfold.
Review: For Those Who Increaseth Knowledge, Increaseth Sorrow - Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. You have all heard of "Frankenstein".The traditional green man, with a square head and bolts in his neck? Well here is the real story of, Frankenstein. This is a ...

My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close

by   Goatius ,  Mar 29, 2000
Pros: True to the novel, good performances, especially DeNiro and Carter
Cons: Branagh's doctor is iffy, the script is a bit of a mishmash
Review: Cool and atmospheric, this film was co-produced by Francis Ford Coppola only two years after he directed Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Striking while the iron was hot, he signed up Kenneth Branagh to direct and star as the slightly mad Dr. Frankenstein....

Visually Astonishing

by   vinman142 ,  Jul 27, 2007
Pros: The Cast, Creature make-up, Costumes, Music, True To Mary's Novel
Cons: Kenneth Branagh can be over the top at times, weak DVD release
The Bottom Line: A film that makes you think.. would you play God?
Review: IT'S ALIVE! Almost everybody has heard of Frankenstein. The crazed doctor who recreates life by turning a corpse into a living creature. In 1818, Mary Shelley, 19 at the time, published her gothic novel "Frankenstein". The chilling story ...

A pleasant surprise

by   Deckard1 ,  Mar 27, 2001
Pros: Deniro, costumes and makeup, compelling and will draw you in
Cons: Branaugh sometimes goes over the top as the doctor
The Bottom Line: See it if you like the story, are interested in the sotry, or would like to se Deniro in a different type of performance
Review: I have never read the book, or seen the older versions of the film. But I love Robert Deniro so I figured I'd give this film a try. I was not disappointed.
Frankenstein I suppose is where someone got the idea that cloning and playing God is...

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

by   Ludy ,  Jun 21, 2001
Pros: All.A lavish movie.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: Rent it.
Review: This is a lavish movie with great costumes
and sets, and it follows the novel fairly
closely. At times it is scarey and spooky as
the monster, the creature is brought to life.

The cast certainly does a great job of acting,

Mary Shelley does Pet Semetery w/Robert De Niro 1994

by   susidee34 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jun 9, 2005
Pros: hmmm ....
Cons: well, ......
The Bottom Line: "Chaos ensues, the innocent die-Who's the monster?-Who's the victim?" ......... iced earth
Review: That stench in the air is not necessarily the reek of rotting flesh used to make up “The Creature” in this movie. Perhaps it is the movie that hovers in the air like a litter box that you forgot to empty. I went into this movie all excited. ...

Overwrought & Flat Attempt at Horror

by   djmont ,  May 25, 2000
Pros: Great Monster
Cons: Flat Story
Review: "Frankenstein" is the ultimate Gothic horror novel; written in 1818, just after the end of one age and before the dawning of another. It was a time of enormous change in society, with the coming of the industrial revolution and the rise of...

Kenneth Branagh's "I'm a God"

by   jbastard75 ,  Jun 6, 2001
Pros: DeNiro is on target as always, especially considering what he has to work with.
Cons: Branagh is so in love with himself it's disgusting.
The Bottom Line: This could have been a great film, but Kenneth Branagh was trying to make a popular film. He wound up with neither.
Review: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. When I first heard about this film being made, I was ecstatic. I loved Bram Stoker's Dracula, and I was drooling at the prospect of a faithful movie adaptation of the classic monster novel. I became more excited when I...

Is this Frankenstein?

by   rosenbaumfan ,  Mar 31, 2002
Pros: Robert DeNiro
Cons: Kenneth Branagh
The Bottom Line: If you like horror picture, I guess you could watch that, but if you're looking for a good dramatic adaptation of the classical novel, avoid it at all costs.
Review: Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has been the story of numerous adaptations to the big screen. Having seen three of them, I must say that they all fail to deliver the true meaning of the story as well as uncover the complete depth of the characters. In...

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: Kenneth Branagh must be destroyed

by   green1 ,  Dec 5, 1999
Pros: DeNiro, and it looks good
Cons: Stop hitting me over the head right now!
The Bottom Line: How's about a little subtlety, Ken? How about humility?
Review: "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is much more faithful to Shelley's classic novel (one of my top five favorite books) than James Whale's famous 1932 version. It's a grand, sweeping horror epic that features stellar production values and a first-rate cast....
